Hydrogen is a natural extension of our core business. ADNOC is already a producer of over 300,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year; used largely for industrial purposes in our downstream facilities. We are exploring opportunities in hydrogen to leverage the UAE’s expansive gas reserves, abundant renewable energy, and global infrastructure and partnerships.
Hydrogen and its carrier fuels, such as ammonia, will be critical enablers to decarbonize hard-to-abate industrial and transport sectors. We are exploring the production of ‘blue’ hydrogen, enabled by the scaling of our carbon capture, utilization, and storage capabilities, and plan to explore green hydrogen opportunities through our partnership with Masdar.
Our scale, technological and operational capabilities, and global partnerships positions us well to support our customers, suppliers and partners with their energy transition journey. In May 2021, we announced a world-scale one million tons per year blue ammonia production facility at the new TA’ZIZ industrial ecosystem and chemicals hub, for a targeted start-up in 2025. In August 2021, we sold our first demonstration cargoes of blue ammonia.
Domestically, we are exploring opportunities for hydrogen to be used in local manufacture and industries to produce and export further decarbonized products.
