Offshore Electrification

The supply of clean grid power will reduce the carbon footprint of our offshore upstream operations by up to 50%.

In 2022, we announced a $3.8 billion, first-of-its-kind, sub-sea transmission network in the MENA region to connect ADNOC’s offshore operations to TAQA’s clean onshore power network, unlocking cost-savings and environmental benefits. This project will reduce ADNOC’s offshore carbon footprint by up to 50%, and further support the UAE ‘Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative’.

Clean grid power will be sent from two onshore locations, Shweiha and Mifra, to Das Island and Zakum Island via two subsea cables both over 130km long. From these offshore islands power will be distributed to other offshore installations. This clean power will replace electricity currently generated from gas turbine generators. The project, which represents a number of industry firsts, is currently being executed with commercial operation commencing in 2025.
