Hydrogen is expected to play a critical role in the global transition towards lower carbon energy sources. Considered an enabler of international decarbonization and sustainable development strategies, hydrogen is expected to account for as much as 18% of global energy demand by 2050.
ADNOC in Hydrogen
ADNOC believes that Hydrogen and its carrier fuels have great potential as new, low carbon fuels, that Abu Dhabi and the UAE are well placed to capitalize upon.In November 2021, his Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed mandated ADNOC to explore potential opportunities in Hydrogen with the ambition to position the UAE as a Hydrogen leader.
ADNOC is already a producer of over 300 kt per year of Hydrogen in its downstream facilities, which is largely used for industrial purposes. It has existing plans to increase Hydrogen production to 500 kt per annum and is exploring several new growth opportunities.
In May 2021, ADNOC announced that it will advance a world-scale 1 million tons per annum “blue” ammonia production facility in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi. The facility, which has moved to the design phase, will be developed at the new TA’ZIZ industrial ecosystem and chemicals hub. The final investment decision for the project is expected in 2022, and start-up is targeted for 2025. In June 2021, it was announced that Fertiglobe, a joint venture between ADNOC and OCI, will join this project.
In August 2021, ADNOC announced that it has sold its first demonstration cargos of Blue Ammonia to three customers in Japan (Itochu, Idemitsu, and Inpex). The blue ammonia was produced by Fertiglobe at its Fertil plan in Ruwais Industrial Complex, and was sold at an attractive premium to grey ammonia, underscoring the favourable economics for blue ammonia as an emerging source of low-carbon energy.
