Leveraging Technology & Partnerships

~80% of our new technology projects are dedicated to sustainable growth through innovation.

We are investing in innovative technology to accelerate decarbonization and transform the energy landscape of tomorrow.

And with industry-leading innovators, we’re working to develop and deploy technologies to achieve our net zero by 2045 ambition.

In 2023 we co-hosted the first-ever UAE CLIMATE TECH  summit. The conference and exhibition brought global policymakers, financiers, and technology pioneers together to take collaborative steps towards the scale-up of effective decarbonization technologies.

At the state-of-the-art ADNOC Research and Innovation Center, our researchers work closely with local and international academics and scientists to advance a range of innovations ranging from hydrogen electrolyzers, to advanced materials and battery storage.

We are also proud of our role as an incubator of promising climate tech start-ups. In 2023 we launched the first ADNOC Technology Decarbonization Challenge, which offers $1 million in pilot opportunities to the winner.

Turning CO₂ into rock

This technology offers one potential solution for mitigating climate change. In partnership with Earthshot prize winners 44.01 and the Fujairah National Resources Corporation, we’re capturing CO₂ directly from the air and permanently mineralizing it within peridotite rock formations.

Pioneering in geothermal energy

Due to high temperatures, cooling is an energy intensive process in the Middle East. We are piloting ways to decarbonize the cooling of buildings in a first-of-its-kind project with Tabreed that harnesses geothermal energy – tapping into the heat within the earth.

As one of the latest examples of our $23 billion allocation towards low-carbon solutions, this project has the potential to support Tabreed to meet up to 10% of Masdar City’s cooling needs and reduce energy demand from the national grid. We are also working with partners to explore ways of expanding its use in the UAE.

Transforming carbon

Through our partnership with LanzaTech, we’re exploring ways to convert waste gases from our facilities into useful materials for everyday products, such as chemicals and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

LanzTech’s Carbon Capture and Transformation (CCT) technology uses microbes to convert carbon-rich waste into products like ethylene to enable a circular carbon economy.

Innovation in action

We are pursuing numerous projects with partners as we move together towards net zero, including:

  • Siemens Energy to leverage blockchain technology to help independently certify the carbon intensity of our products.
  • Power-Id repurposing second-life EV batteries into a mobile battery energy storage system to decarbonize our production activities in remote locations. This project will decrease CO2 emissions by up to 25% and energy expenditure by up to 50%.
  • EDGE to minimize our operational emissions with cutting-edge drones made in the UAE.
  • Baker Hughes subsidiaries Nemesys and Levidian to find novel ways of producing green hydrogen and graphene.
